The dynamic duo of the Hydra Facial + Laser Genesis and why every “bride to be” needs this service before their big day! I reached out to skin care specialist AJ Trew and my bride from last summer to discuss the journey of a bride’s skin care regime.
Last year I was honoured to be asked by AJ Trew, Clinical Director of Saskatoon’s Dermapure Clinic to be her bridal makeup artist. I love doing makeup and it’s even more of a dream job when your client has the best skin! I met AJ for her trial a few weeks before her wedding day and her skin was glowing and gorgeous. i was thrilled!
Then came the wedding day and I started doing her makeup, I was in shock! – how was it even possible for her skin to get so much better than her trial ? How was this possible, I needed to know. Not only was AJ’s skin hydrated, glowing and incredibly gorgeous, the makeup was even more beautiful – and we only needed a minimal amount of makeup on the skin.
A HydraFacial is the best way to deeply moisturize and revitalize skin. Gentle exfoliation helps to uncover a new layer of skin, while extraction with painless suction removes debris from pores. Antioxidants and peptides in the high-quality serums used during treatment instantly counteract the effects of aging and dehydration in the skin’s deeper layers. Pair it with the Laser Genesis and it’s a magic treatment!

Laser Genesis® utilizes non-invasive laser technology to treat fine line wrinkles safely, discreetly, and effectively, large pores, uneven skin texture, diffuse redness, and scars. Micro-pulses of laser energy are gently delivered to the skin. The laser stimulates the body’s own processes to activate collagen remodeling to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and unwanted brown spots. In addition, Laser Genesis addresses facial redness by targeting the excess micro vessels. Although the individual treatment results are subtle, the overall effect of a treatment series can be quite dramatic.
I reached out to AJ to ask her a few questions about her bridal skin care journey and to tell us more on what she did to get her skin bridal ready!
Holly: I absolutely loved doing your makeup for your wedding day! Can you tell me about the journey to get your skin bridal ready for your big day?
AJ: I have always had a good skin care routine, so for me it was important to maintain what was working and adjust anything well in advance that needed to be. I also started months before doing treatments to prepare my skin. Microneedling treatments to help with texture, pore size and collagen stimulation. HydraFacial and Laser Genesis treatments to help with my hydration, redness, and glow to my skin. As well as Botox for my fine lines. I did all these over the year before my wedding to ensure my skin was ready for the day.
Holly: How many treatments of HydraFacial & Laser Genesis do you recommend doing for a bride and how far apart do you do them?
AJ: If you do not have any specific skin concerns or conditions, we are treating then 4 treatments 4 weeks apart before your wedding is a great timeline. You want to have time to stimulate collagen and see the results from the treatments. Unfortunately, just like going to the gym, we cannot do one treatment and be done. A series of treatments is where you are going to see the best results.
Holly: What if a bride struggles with skin sensitivity or acne. Who is the service geared towards?
AJ: That is one of the great things about the HydraFacial and Laser Genesis combination treatment, it is great for everyone, even sensitive skin. With the HydraFacial for sensitive skin, doing a test patch just to be safe can always be done. Laser Genesis is great for any inflammation in the skin, whether it is from acne, rosacea, or sun damage. It is always best to have thorough consultation and create a treatment plan as results can take time and treatments vary based on your concern and desired results.
Holly: Is there anything you should avoid using on your skin before your treatment?
AJ: Stop any Retinol (vitamin A), AHAs/BHAs and exfoliating products 5 days prior to a HydraFacial treatment, as we are also exfoliating your skin and it can be too much. You will also avoid them after the treatment as well. This treatment is great to do all year round, you do not have to be as careful with sun exposure as other laser treatments. However always wearing SPF and reapplying is a must all year round for healthy skin.
Holly: What skin care regime do you recommend using while doing these treatments?
AJ: Everyone’s skin and concerns are different, what your skin needs can vary and may require different key ingredients. Consulting and working closely with a provider are the best step. Estheticians and Technicians are pro’s when it comes to skincare and can help guide you through the right routine for you! Now, all that said, everyone needs to be using an SPF daily and reapplying if outside all year round. This is the best product you can use for healthy skin and anti-ageing. Some of my favorite ingredients that I see a difference in people’s skin is with Retinols or AHAs/BHAs, and Vitamin C. I use these personally with the Functionalab Ellagic C Serum, which I cannot live without and Functionalab Retinol 0.5% and have found they have made a great difference in my skin, when used properly.
Holly: I could not believe the difference of how your bridal makeup was on your day! How many days before your wedding date should you have this dynamic duo of a treatment done? And why do you pair them together?
AJ: I love this treatment before a special event, especially if you are getting your make-up done by a professional. Ideally doing the treatment a few days before your wedding or event is perfect. However, I never suggest doing anything new the week of your wedding, so only do the treatment that same week if you have been doing a series. We do the HydraFacial first because it helps to slough off dead skin, clean out the pores and hydrate the skin preparing it for the Laser Genesis. The Laser Genesis can then target deeper into the skin. The other bonus is that they are both relaxing and comfortable that patients often have a nap during the treatment. This is one of our popular treatment with all our patients, especially bride’s to achieve that natural glow on their wedding day!
