“Don’t complain about the results you don’t get with work you didn’t do.”
I’m so grateful for my career success. How did it happen? I can attribute it to four things: hard work, determination, resiliency, and other people.
Upon returning to Vancouver with a master’s degree in Journalism from USC, I needed a job but had zero connections in the local industry. After many futile months of resume-dropping, my mom learned that her friend worked for Global TV’s news director. (Then called UTV.) She was his house cleaner. We convinced her to give him my demo tape. I was going to find a way into that newsroom, no matter what!
In 2014, it was time to pivot again. Change can be scary, but without it, and without taking risks, good things can’t happen either. After countless informational calls, taking classes, and the willingness to take on any small job, I launched a new phase of my career – my own public relations firm where I work with small to medium-sized companies to help them grow their brands and businesses.
I love working for myself because I can decide who I work with and it gives me the flexibility to pursue other passions, including travel, acting, and fashion. I can’t underestimate how much our success depends on others. Foster those relationships! From the TV executives who said yes, to my first PR client who took a chance on me, I thank you.
Today, I try to give back my time and knowledge, lifting up the next woman (or person) who needs help achieving her dreams. Pay it forward sisters!
