When it comes to beauty, celebrities have a team of professionals to keep them red carpet ready. Having worked with the best photographers in Vancouver, in front of, and behind the scenes in film, who better to consult than Vancouver’s very own celebrity makeup artist and hairstylist Lily Ling? Lily, what expert tips do you have for the everyday woman?
One HUGE mistake when planning a wedding or event is reserving a makeup artist too late in the game. It is a great compliment to be chosen, but I am saddened when I have to reply that their date and time is no longer available.
PREPARATION IS EVERYTHING: Having planned my own wedding and photo shoots across the world gives me the advantage of working with brides of various skin tones and cultures. It may be their first wedding, but not mine! A photograph is forever, and the more prepared you are, the happier you will be to share your images! Be ready with sample photos. A trial is the best time to discover how your ideas translate on your features.
BE EFFICIENT: Timelines are often severely underestimated. With my experience in front of the camera, and behind as a makeup artist, my vision takes all variables into account. For example, makeup has to be amplified to combat the bright lights of professional photography and a seemingly benign stray hair will destroy an otherwise perfect picture. When time is of the essence, we need to prioritize and optimize what the camera captures. This maximizes the number of photographs to choose from.
SELF-CARE: Use the motivation of your special event to optimize your skin care, diet, and exercise. Too often, brides tell me they didn’t take care of themselves before their wedding. Remember to love yourself. Instead of relying on makeup do the heavy lifting, do that at the gym instead! It is heartwarming when women tell me I’ve been a part of their transformation long after their event is over. One of my treasured clients is a woman who initially sought me out for her LinkedIn picture. She tells me she uses scheduled photoshoots to hold herself accountable!
CONFIDENCE: I am often the last person a performer sees before she goes on stage. She may be nervous during prep, but all her millions of fans see is pure confidence. Remember, when you get in front of the camera, relax and own your beauty because you’ve prepared for it, emotionally and physically! In fact, why wait for a special event to begin the metamorphosis of being your best? The time to begin is now, and I am honoured to be by your side.
