Following the path of kindness and curiosity, founder and creative, Caroline MacGillivray experienced adventures that have led to friendship, career opportunities, and bringing hope and healing to women and youth!
“Oooooh, I love your lipstick! What shade is that?” are words that I have spoken and received vastly different results. Once I got sucker-punched by someone who thought I was hitting on her. Another time, I booked my first voice-over gig and writing assignment. Thankfully, most of the time when I compliment someone, it makes them smile. We can’t control someone’s reaction to us. There will be times we get kicked in the teeth and other times when it forges friendships. I’ve found approaching the world through the lens of curiosity and wonderment has brought success and joy to myself and others.
My curiosity and love for beauty have led me to meet like-minded people. Some adventures I’ve experienced include screaming into a microphone as the sound engineer winces pulling the headphones away from their ears as they capture a sound bite for a project for film and television, getting flown up to a recording studio in Haida Gwai to record backup vocals for bands recording albums, and picking chanterelle mushrooms amidst the forest to prep for dinner. This has also led to writing lifestyle segments for tourism publications, hosting a sexual health and relationship radio show, teaching pole dancing, raising money for charity teaching bunny yoga, becoming a medical Qi Gong therapist, and creating projects that build community and healing in marginalized communities.
Once I volunteered at a shelter and offered to someone struggling to curl her hair. The woman that I helped thanked me and told me that I made her feel “human.” That act of service led to founding the charity, Beauty Night Society. The past two decades have provided opportunities to create hope and healing for women and youth in Vancouver‘s Downtown Eastside.
By being kind and curious to myself, I am able to create a ripple effect of hope and healing for others. Surrounding myself with people who make me laugh, love, and give me hope lets me continue to share kindness and curiosity.
