Bif Naked is a Canadian actress, motivational speaker, poet, pop and rock singer, and songwriter.
As I go through life, I live in enormous gratitude and awareness. I have always felt incredibly blessed, not just as an adopted kid, but as an eternal optimist. And, with a true awareness that I am forever learning and aiming to be a better person. Like many of us, I guess I have always tried to evolve, or grow, whether or not I knew how, or even had the grace to do it. But whether or not the journey was a hard or happy one, the truth is that “grace” never really helped me. Only self-discipline did. It’s a lesson I learned and carried with me my whole life.
When I was in the sixth grade, I was the class clown, and I got into trouble frequently. My teacher felt that the best punishment for me was to write lines. Like, a thousand lines per offense. At the time, I felt incredibly persecuted and quite sorry for my twelve-year-old self. But the truth is- it was the best training I ever had.
The repetition of these lines not only perfected my famous, curvy handwriting, but drove the message of these lines home. Decades later, I still remember the line:
“Self-discipline requires doing what is necessary when it should be done, whether it is a pleasant task or not”
It is the best advice, and I STILL live by this! Nothing ever comes easily. Growth, either personally or in our businesses or art, takes work. Sometimes, it is very hard, and for most – it would probably be easier to just give up. But having the self-discipline to keep at it, stay consistent, and remain on our path is what makes the biggest difference in anything we do. Because evolution and change are hard, and take all of our commitment, no matter what!
Self-discipline is our truth! And it takes authentic, steady self-discipline to achieve anything we do in life. As the line says, “Whether it is a pleasant task or not.” The reward is finding joy in the journey and finding our grace along the way.
