Kim Appelt is a celebrity fashion stylist, YouTuber, and content producer for brands. She is also a champion for everyday women.
For as long as I can remember, I have been dressing people. My first and very willing participant was my little sister, Kristen. I would place my mother’s nylons tightly on her small head to create an imaginary long Elsa-like braid. The smile on her cherub face as she got in her “wheelbarrow-chariot” with her beautiful braid and outfit made my heart beat faster, and it was then a desire to dress and create was born.
Fast forward many years, I did what everyone told me to do. I received two sensible degrees in university, got married, had three beautiful children, and stayed home to raise them. I dreamed of going back into fashion, dressing people for the red carpet, and helping the everyday woman. The woman that was also at home raising kids, working on her career, the one I wanted to show that you could do anything and feel good every day in your clothing. That everyday woman that was me; I needed to help her.
Everyone told me I couldn’t, but I started dressing myself and taking pictures for a blog with hopes to inspire. I withstood the criticism of the women around me that didn’t understand my larger goal. I took a course in styling, and one client at a time, doors started opening, and I just kept saying yes. I said yes for my kids so they could see the importance of following your dreams, for the other moms that also wanted to turn their dreams into goals, and for the everyday woman so I could eventually reach her and encourage her. Over time, more doors opened, I styled celebrities for magazines and red carpets. I turned my blog into a YouTube channel that has millions of views, I have a pending book deal, and a TV show in the development phase.
I now have the ability to reach every woman, to encourage her, help her dress, and help her feel confident in her clothing. The moral of the story is; if you have a dream, pursue it, live it. Write it down and become it. Everyone is built with a purpose; pursue yours. Mine was the everyday woman that lives in all of us that wants to look and feel her best, that wants to contribute to a higher purpose. I am here for her, cheering her on.
