Shantel Taylor is a hairstylist and mother who dedicates her life to family and those searching for inner peace through their “journey of the heart.”
What advice would you give an earlier version of yourself?
Be kind, find your voice and remain true to yourself. Growing up, I never felt I had a voice. When I found the courage to accept my strengths and flaws, I recognized my personal power and gifts. Also, look at life as an adventure!! Give yourself permission to explore this beautiful world!!
What has been the greatest shift in your career of life and how did you navigate through it?
I was nervous to start a career, but my heart knew it was time. Anxiety was something I had struggled with, and although scary and intimidating, hairstyling was familiar and dependable. Every day I felt like an imposter because I was naive about the world and unsure of myself. The intimate conversations and vulnerability of touching a stranger freaked me out so I learned to “fake it till you make it!!” Here I found my greatest strengths, empathy and the art of heartfelt listening. I learned to listen with my senses, and this was how I connected on the most intimate level with an enormously diverse group of people. I treasure these relationships as I recognize they are what life is about.
Who or what has been your greatest influence in your life or career?
My Mother has been my greatest influence in both my personal and business life. The life we had was not an easy one for her. Working in her home salon gave us security in knowing she was always there. She had a steady stream of friends, always enjoyed people and managed to care for us even in the toughest periods. She was always grateful and shared everything she had and to this day is the most generous person I know. Even during the most tumultuous times she would give you the shirt off her back. She taught us to have faith in things working their way out, to be brave and honest. My mom is a fun and beautiful soul and has always put her family first. She has clearly been the strongest, most courageous influence in my life. It’s because of her I try to be the best Mom to my children and support them with leadership and enormous love.
What are you up to right now that people should know about?
This past year immense change has shown me that I also need to make a drastic shift. I love my clients and always being helpful to others, but unable to work in a salon setting has given me a window of opportunity I have been massaging for a long time. Through these challenging days I have tried to provide more wellness coaching for people on their journey of self-discovery and personal growth. Life’s challenges are tough and having the most vulnerable and deeply personal conversations with people is where I feel most comfortable. I have always felt blessed to provide a calm and intimate ear for others and in this next year I want to focus on growing this part of my business. I’ll continue to study, research, learn and grow to become the best space I can for anyone looking to find their own inner peace.
