When you first started your career, how did you know you were ready and what made you start?
I have had two starts to my career. One when I first finished school and then 13 years later after I had my second child. I loved being a stay-at-home mom for 6 years to my children, but as time went on, I became aware that I could only depend on myself. So, when my 2nd son was 9 months old, I returned to the workplace, knowing that the success I find in my career benefits my confidence as a mother. Returning to work was the best thing I ever did for myself. It gave me self confidence and independence, both so important for my new start at life. I don’t know if I could have made the necessary life changes if I didn’t have my career.
What is your favourite thing about what you do in your career and why?
I work in an industry of animal lovers. I have had a love and passion for animals since I was a child. I started working in Animal Nutrition 19 years ago, and eventually returned here 12 years later. I love the company I work for, I believe in their philosophy, and they truly put animals first. I am also very fortunate to work with a strong female leadership team at Champion Petfoods.
Do you have a mantra or phrase you live by? What is it?
My favourite phrase is “Choosing Peace every time”. My greatest goal for my life is choosing peace. I lived in a world of chaos for many years, and I had become physically ill from the stress. When I made some important life changes, my health improved. I truly understood that Peace in my life is the most important thing for me. When I make decisions, or choose who I spend my time with, I pause to reflect if this will add to the peace in my life or take away from it. I will always choose peace every single time.
What do you have going on that you’d like to share?
As my life became more chaotic and overwhelming, I stopped doing the things I loved. One of the things I love most is photography. During my years as a stay-at-home mom, I had the opportunity to travel and study with very some talented photographers. That community and my camera brought me such joy. Now that I am once again in control of my life, I look forward to picking up my camera once again. I hope some of you can follow me on my journey to see what will inspire me, and what I will capture through my “new” lens.
