Maddison Bell is the author and illustrator of the children’s book, Victoria’s Playhouse. Victoria’s Playhouse tells the story of a young girl, Victoria, exploring the theatre for the first time. With the help of musicians, makers, and even a moose, Victoria learns how to put on a show!
Having worked in professional theatre at the Victoria Playhouse Petrolia since the age of 19, Maddison has worn many hats in the industry including performance, costume and set design, prop building, and stage management. Victoria shares a sentiment in the book that is close to my heart. “You will never work a day when your passion is your profession.” My career in the theatre has allowed me to make a living doing what I love. As I evolve as a person, I find that the theatre reveals another avenue to explore, one that serves the latest version of ‘me’. There are many jobs in this world that I could do, but only one that doesn’t feel like a ‘job’. And if my passions were ever to change, I would want to keep this motto close to me. The goal is to stay fulfilled in life, to be happy. I hope that in Victoria’s magical little way, she helps push readers towards following their wildest dreams. If 20 years ago you would have told me I would be doing work projects that involve making fancy hats out of cardboard and feathers, a kindergartener would have looked back at you and said “well, that’s what I did at school today!” Now, that’s a pretty big understatement of what I create in a day at the theatre, but I promise you I come at it with the same joy and curiosity as a kindergartner would.
