Samantha Brazeau-Wilson is a Social Media Marketer and Owner & Designer of Birch Jewellery.
Growing up in small-town Northern Ontario, my backyard was a forest, and our street didn’t have sidewalks. Most folks in my hometown had lived there all their lives. My grandparents lived just down the road, and much of my extended family resided five or ten minutes away. Childhood days were spent outside, using my imagination to play with foraged pinecones and sticks, building houses with leaves, and making mud pies. My way of life was idyllic, but my ambitions were far greater than the opportunities my hometown could ever provide.
Infatuated with New York City, I watched movies depicting women with flourishing careers living in the urban jungle. So, at the bright age of eighteen, I packed up my things and moved to the nation’s capital to pursue my studies in Journalism. Upon graduating, I realized the industry had taken a giant turn towards digital media, leaving newspapers and publications across the country to downsize and shift. That meant I, too, needed to shift. Instead of getting discouraged, I leaned into my love for the online space and started working in digital marketing and social media. It was the best decision I have ever made, thanks to trusting my intuition and following my passion.
While maintaining my marketing career, I found time to tap into my creative side and began making nature-inspired jewellery. Perhaps it was to pass the time during school or as a nod to my hometown, but what started as a late-night hobby flourished and became a successful brand adored by nature-lovers across Canada and beyond. Birch Jewellery, my entrepreneurial venture, continues to be my favourite vehicle for creativity.
Throughout my journey to womanhood, the thing that has endured is the heart of that little girl, who used her big imagination to create beautiful things. Whether creating a social media campaign or a new accessory, my inner child will always be included in my pursuit of happiness. From my backyard to the big city, to who knows where next, I believe that the universe will lead me to where I am supposed to be.
