I’m so enjoying the spring vibes everywhere. Not only is it getting me in the mood to head outdoors but it’s also inspiring to start some spring cleaning!
That sent me on the path of trying to find an easier way to clean my makeup sponges and beauty blenders. (Don’t worry, I do clean them more than once a year.)
I had tried a few different methods including using shampoo, which I usually use to clean my makeup brushes (more on that below) and scrubbing the sponges with soap and then rinsing. But neither method was very effective. That nasty makeup gunk never seemed to come out completely.
I also read about one method that includes putting your sponge in a dishwashing liquid bath and then microwaving it. Two words: Don’t bother.
I finally stumbled on a very quick, effective, and somewhat surprising method. All it takes is some dish soap, and, wait for it, olive oil!
Put a little bit of dish soap into a bowl and add some olive oil. Mix it. Put in your sponge or beauty blender and soak up all of the mixture, rubbing it into the sponge a bit. Then, rinse the sponge in warm running water. Ta da! That’s it and it works like a dream.
I haven’t tried other types of oil as yet but I suspect they’ll work as well. But as we know that olive oil is moisturizing and good for the skin, I’m going to stick with that.
This is also a good way to clean makeup brushes that you use with oil based products, like foundation or lip gloss.
Did you buy a shampoo that you’re not enamoured with? Instead of tossing it, save it for washing delicates. I use my so-so shampoos to clean makeup brushes reserved for dry products, things like blush and eyeshadow. I swish those around in a shampoo/warm water bath. I also use shampoo to clean hair brushes, combs and cashmere sweaters.
