After working in the beauty industry for over 20 years, one thing I have always invested in – is good hair!
It’s been the self care for me that I personally love and always feel just a little better after I get my hair done.
I was introduced to tape in extensions so many years ago and loved having a bit more length added to my natural hair.
In trying absolutely everything and with so many new things over the years – my favourite hair extensions hands down are PHILOCALY HAIR EXTENSIONS

I always trust what method of hair extensions the owners of Philocaly and my hairstylist Kassy Moen recommend for me.
I am very lucky to have these professionals in my corner to guide me on what’s best. I do know that not everyone has that and it’s a gamble sometimes when you want the hair but don’t end up with what you want and are left disappointed.

After so many questions from clients, friends and family – I wanted to share my personal experience and a guide from the hair pros so we can guide you on how to get those gorgeous mermaid locks!

I spent the day with my personal hairstylist Kassy Moen – Kassy Moen is a Master Extensionist at Sage Beauty Bar in Saskatoon. She has been an educator for multiple brands for the last 15 years. She’s been trained in the Habit, Invisible Bead Extension and Luna methods to name a few and was one of the inventors of the original Philocaly extension method. She spends her time away from her chair with her sweet little girl Addison and her lovely assistant Abby Pratt at Sage Beauty Bar.
My hair is naturally thick (which I am very lucky) so I really like the length I can achieve with extensions. Plus I love being blonde and having extensions helps with that gorgeous thick blonde look.
Kassy recommended we use the Philocaly hand tied wefts in the 22 inch length. She wanted to use three different tones of Philocaly extensions to give my hair dimension. The three she chose for installation was “oh my ombre” “parisan dream” and “basic instinct”.
While Kassy was creating hair art for me – (which it 100% is) I asked her for information to help anyone who wants to get hair extensions.
HAIR EXTENSION Q +A with senior hairstylist and extension specialist Kassy Moen

Q. What questions should you ask your hair stylist before getting extensions ?
A. (Kassy)
The first step is a hair consultation with your stylist. It’s important you ask your hairstylist what experience they have and what methods of training they have as well. Experience with extensions is key! It’s also very important if you have fine hair that your stylist knows how to install extensions properly.
Q. How do you choose which extensions to purchase and what colour tones to get for your hair?
A. Again this is why you must book a consultation first.
This is a “don’t try this at home folks” -always get your stylist to decide on the type of extensions, colour tones and length. It’s also important to get a clear understanding of costs involved on your hair extensions.
Q. What is the costs involved in getting hair extensions ?
A. This varies on location, experience of the hairstylist and the type of hair your are having installed.
Price ranges anywhere from $1000-$3000

Q. Should you get your hair coloured or highlighted the same day as getting extensions put in?
A. We keep hair extensions in stock in the salon, so if a guest decides they want hair extensions at their appointment, we can decide that day as well. Everything can be done all in one appointment. Highlights or colour and extension installation on the same day!
Q. Should you have your hair extensions cut or trimmed ?
A. Absolutely! You 100% need them to be cut, blended and shaped so its looks like your real hair and not a bad wig!
Q. How do you find a qualified stylist or salon ?
A. Definitely check our Philocaly’s website to find their listings

Q. Once you have extensions – how do you take care of them? I have been so lucky to have weekly blowouts with Abby and I would say this is the absolute best way I have found to take care of mine.
A. 100% yes! If you can get a proper blowout once a week its the best way to take care of your hair extensions and they will last so well by doing that.
Q. If regular blowouts are not in the budget or do not work with your calendar what are the products you recommend and how do you take care of them at home?
A. The biggest thing for home care is BRUSH BRUSH BRUSH
I recommend a soft bristle brush or the Wet Brush is amazing and a great choice.
Also and so important – NEVER got to bed with your hair wet. This causes the top of the wefts to swell and to be ruined.
Make sure everyday you are using a hair oil Oribe GOLD LUST NOURISHING HAIR OIL on your ends.
I would recommend this hair shampoo and conditioner and mask for home hair care for hair extensions.
Oribe GOLD LUST REPAIR & RESTORE SHAMPOO
Oribe GOLD LUST REPAIR & RESTORE CONDITIONER
GOLD LUST TRANSFORMATIVE MASQUE
I have been loving my hair so much and what I love is no one knows I have extensions. My hair is so well blended and looks so natural. I can pull my hair up in a pony tail and everything is hidden and looks and feels beautiful!
I think if you are wanting to take the leap into hair extensions it’s important to do it right. It is an investment but when you buy the right products and hair AND hire an educated hairstylist you can relax and know you are in good hands.
I would also highly recommend the Philocaly silk pillowcase, I sleep with mine every night and its my favourite!

I really love all the accessories that Philocaly has as well, I find the scrunchies work so well with my extensions.

You can purchase all of Philocaly’s accessories online here.
Thank you Kassy Moen and Philocaly Hair Extensions for making my hair dreams come true – I absolutely LOVE my hair!
