I have always loved the look of an undone beachy wave, the look is an effortless “all day at the beach” look and so on trend!
I reached out to my hairstylist friends and asked them to give me all their pro tips and tricks on how to get this look.
Here are a few things I have used and tried on my hair that has given me some good results.
I love braiding my hair when it’s wet and then letting it dry and when I take it out the next day, I have a beachy crimpy wave to my hair. Very undone but good for camping or when you can’t use your hot tools.
For hot tools I love the BEX curling iron ( tried and true) and I just recently tried the Paul Mitchell Dream Hair wave tool and absolutely love it!
Now I will leave this part up to the hair experts as these ladies are my hair girls who always give me the best blowouts and styles when I need it.
When I reached out to one of my besties and hair guru Rachel Stange of Free Bird Hair Design about beach waves she said,
“Beach waves are here to stay and this year in particular they’re extra causal. With “I woke up like this” vibes, the 2021 beach wave has a laid-back feel and it’s actually quite easy to achieve!”

I love this as aren’t we ALL looking for an “I woke up like this” hair look this summer?
To get this causal-cool look, Rachel recommends to section your hair into three parts- bottom nape, middle, and top. Starting at the bottom section, spritz a setting spray to prep for curling.
She loves using Kevin Murphy’s Anti.Gravity spray, it’s an incredible memory setting spray that keeps the hair soft and workable. For each section, take vertical sub-sections and curl in alternating directions, this can be done with a 1″ curling iron or flat iron. To achieve that relaxed feel, leave the ends out- this is essential to ensure the style doesn’t get to bouncy! Once you’re done curling, flip your head upside down and spray a texture spray all over. To finish things off Rachel Stange recommends using Kevin Murphy Bedroom.Hair finishing spray,“it adds touchable texture, separation and movement. Flip it back over and run your fingers through from roots to tips softening and breaking up the curls. Finish your tousled locks with a light hairspray like Kevin Murphy Session.Spray Flex– this gives your style a flexible hold without the crunch! Viola, you’re beach babe ready!
Rachel’s biggest advice is for creating beachy waves is,
“Not to over think it, the more imperfect the curls are, the more beachier the look!”

I also reached out to my friend and hair expert Danielle Konjolka of Beauty by Dani to get all her best advice for this hairstyle.
When I asked Dani about this hair trend she said,
“If effortless hair was a trend, this would be it. Every summer, we see a form of beach waves pop up, in 2021, they are extra casual. It’s a look that oozes the laid-back vibe of second-day hair while still keeping things totally calm, cool & put together. Think outdoor concert meets sun- tanned beach babe.”

This is totally it!
Dani said that there are many ways to create this undone look and some must have products you can use. This will vary depending on if you have naturally wavy texture or you want to air dry & use a hot tool in your hair. They all create a different look and are trendy & gorgeous.
Let’s break down 3 ways to achieve this beautiful summer texture & products Dani recommends.
Let’s talk about how to achieve those waves.
1.Naturally Wavy hair will need to be nurtured in the shower & scrunched or diffused throughout the drying process.
Danielle recommends the Renew or Smoothing & Smoothing Deep Conditioner or a go-to nourishing treatment like the Advanced In Shower Masque on naturally wavy hair as it is usually paired with some frizz.
Use a micro fibre towel to protect the hair cuticle and prevent frizz from the start! On wet hair add Restore Leave In Conditioner, AirDry Cream and spray the new Wave Spray all over. Start Scrunching & Diffuse for beautiful loose waves. Finish with the Glossy Shine Mist.
2. If you’re not naturally curly, and like heatless waves, Danielle recommends another way is to do Twists in sections or 2 French Braids. The tighter the braids, the wavier you hair will be.
Take apart the next day and use a little Rejuveniqe Oil, Sculpting Taffy or Glossy Shine Mist to smooth out. Dani loves using a little Dry Texturizing Spray too as it’s like a Sea Salt Spray without the harsh salt & it will give your curls volume, texture & definition!
3. If your hair is straight & you love hot tools.. there are lots of options out there to give your hair body Dani says you can achieve beach waves with a flat iron by taking 2” sections throughout your head and creating deep waves by turning your wrist up and down repetitively throughout your head & if you want to use a curling iron for texture, if you’re curling your hair with an iron, create vertical curls and leave the last 2” out so they are straight and finger comb through to break it up. Use dry texturizing Spray to add oomph!
There are Deep Wavers & Mermaid Irons that do the work for you and do a good job.
Think- triple barrels, but bigger and looser barrels- picture here. They are meant for waves!
Danielle says to pick your waving tool and work in sections. When using a heat tool, heat protection is a must. Pro tip: Don’t leave the iron on very long.. less curl is better. She recommends the Heat Protectant Spray as it protects up to 450, has UV protection & has a natural silicone alternative to reduce friction while styling. The key to these tools is effortless, so it should be fairly quick! Always finish the hair with Rejuveniqe Oil to add shine & softness and keep you hair healthy and strong.
I have hair extensions and definitely wanted pro advice from the best. I reached out to my friend Kassy Moen, (@kassymoen) Philocaly Hair Educator and Senior Stylist at Sage Beauty Bar for some pro tips on the products and tools that are safe for extensions and to create a beautiful beach wave.
Kassy’s go to products for that beachy undone look is the Apres beach spray by Oribe for texture and the Swept UP by Oribe.
Apres beach spray by Oribe is a Shake. Spray on wet or dry hair and then tousle to taste and let dry in the sunny air. Year-round beach-inspired waves without salty stiffness, adds moisture and shine, specially designed nozzle sprays into the hair to create wavy, piecey hair texture. The perfect product for that beach wave.
To add a little volume use the Swept up by Oribe. Shake and spray into dry hair, focusing on roots. Style with fingers or brush for instant expansiveness.
Amika triple barrel iron is Kassy’s recommendation for hot tools. This hair waver creates a flawless beach waves with a design that allows for crease-free waves on all hair types.
So let’s hit the beach ladies or let’s go out with our new beachy waves this summer, it’s a hot hair trend this year!
